Cover yourself in your cover letter - Hallie Crawford

Cover yourself in your cover letter These days I have career coaching clients that ask me frequently if a cover letter is still necessary. I say absolutely, unless the employer specifically tells you not to include one. It shows your ability to communicate and that you’re interested enough in the position to write one. Include it even if you’re uncertain if it’s necessary. Err on the side of providing it. Also, you need to be sure you cover yourself in your cover letter. Sometimes people use a standard or template resume or cover letter to apply for all the jobs they’re considering. It’s okay to use a template, but remember, always tailor each resume and cover letter to each job. Don’t use the same one for the same position even if you think it’s a similar job. Take the time to make sure that yours speaks to the position, and to what the company is looking for. One thing that you should always do is back up the claims that are in your cover letter, on your resume as well. Your cover letter and resume should go hand in hand. Don’t treat them as separate items. If you say you possess a specific skill, or have experience in an area or industry relevant to the job, make sure you back that up in your resume. Be careful though, because you don’t want your cover letter to be a carbon copy of your resume. Make sure you refine the information in your resume and explain in greater detail how your experience or skill set brings value to the position at the company you’re applying for. Benefits of Hiring a Professional Resume Writer

Benefits of Hiring a Professional Resume Writer Now that you have found the perfect job, it is time to dust off that old resume and begin polishing it for the next phase in your career. However, it’s been a while since you last updated it; you’re not sure if the rules have changed, and how do you really organize a resume these days? If these are questions you are asking yourself, it may be time to hire an outside person to assist with your resume and cover letter. Many of my clients are individuals that have worked for many years and, in their eyes, haven’t had a reason to update their resumes. Suddenly, they find themselves out of work or seeking a new opportunity and they don’t know where to begin. Hiring a resume writer can be beneficial for several reasons. First, you are hiring a professional that has consistently been writing resumes on a frequent basis and should be up-to-date on the latest trends. Secondly, it is always helpful to talk to someone that can provide a “second set of eyes” for formatting issues, spelling, and organizational issues. Lastly, an outside person will ask questions and will likely draw out additional useful information that you may not have considered adding to your resume. Many individuals don’t realize the amount of work and responsibility they have until they start to discuss it with other people. As a professional, part of my job is to learn everything I can about your previous employment experiences and utilize these skills when creating a customized resume for you. The bottom line? Consider investing in a professional resume writer when it’s time to start your job search. The value you gain from this experience will be well worth it when you are able to send a custom, polished, and professional resume to prospective employers.
